Isn’t this the first rule of starting a brick and mortar business? Without location no one will know about where you are at. Likewise the internet is all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Over 80% of people find where they want to go through Google alone. Getting yourself on the search engines is hard within itself which brings us to our next pitfall.

Starting an online website is hard within itself, but the hardest part isn’t actually building the website it’s getting people to come to it. You can have a great website and even a great product but if no one see’s it its useless. Most people do not know about SEO, or if they do they may not know that much about it. SEO stands for search engine optimization. The reason its important is because 80% of the U.S market finds where they want to go through Google ALONE. That means if your not listed in the top page rank its going to be hard to get people to come to your website. The biggest failure of most entrepreneur’s or small business owners who want to build an e-commerce store is the unrealistic expectation that your site will be first to pop up for electronics or fashion apparel. Getting a page rank of number 1 takes many months, and I defy anyone to tell you they can do it in a couple days. Even paying for SEO and ads will not get you a page rank of one.

Web Design has become a business that everyone feels like they know how to do. However getting a shoddy webdesigner who doesn’t employe proper web design practices can actually hurt your website severely. You must tailor your website to be easily indexable, secure, and well designed. You would be surprised at even some of the firms that charge 15,000+ per website that employ bad tactics for web design.

Can you start your own online business and succeed? Definitely! But you need to have a plan, and realize it will take a long time for your business to get customers through the internet. If your starting an online business expect to get your customers through posting on traditional in person forms of marketing (i.e. word of mouth). If you work hard word will spread about your site and within a years time a hard work you may start getting you a pagerank on google or msn.
