Most people don’t realize that a computer has tons of unecessary applications and even viruses starting up that hog valuable system resources. This makes a perfectly good computer often lag and creates an overall bad experience for individuals. Press control alt delete and start the task manager. Navigate to the processes tab ad and ensure that all processes are being shown. Most computers should have from 30-50 processes running. If yours has more chances are you could stand to benefit alot from this blog post.

Step 1 – See which start programs are loading

Press the start button and if your using Windows 7 or Vista simply type “msconfig”. If your on Windows XP or 2000 hit start run and type “msconfig”

Step 2 – See which programs are starting up

Navigate to the tab that says startup applications and choose which programs you do not want to start. This part may seem daunting but just keep in mind NOTHING you do can harm your computer. If you make a change here that you do not like simply change back the settings. Some programs such as QT task (quick time) or Skype are obvious and do not need to be started when the computer starts. They only hog memory and CPU resources. As a good rule of thumb uncheck all startup applications and go back to add the ones you actually use. Some may be essential; for example if you are using a Laptop there might be a logitechnav application for your mousepad. If there is a process name you are unfamiliar with simply type it on Google and you can get a full description.

Finally, you can now restart your computer and check the current system processes running by hitting control alt delete and starting the task manager. On the processes tab click to make sure its showing all system processes and compare how many were running in the background before you removed the startup applications to after. This is a simple step that can do wonders for increasing your computer speed, removing viruses and unwanted adaware starting up, and making your overall computer experience better.

Alot of e-commerce customers come to BreezyPC in hopes of building their online business and reaching new heights and new bounds utilizing the power of the internet. While I am happy to be part of a company that enables people to build their dreams here are some common pitfalls of I witness daily.

Location Location Location

Isn’t this the first rule of starting a brick and mortar business? Without location no one will know about where you are at. Likewise the internet is all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Over 80% of people find where they want to go through Google alone. Getting yourself on the search engines is hard within itself which brings us to our next pitfall.

Unrealistic Expectations

Starting an online website is hard within itself, but the hardest part isn’t actually building the website it’s getting people to come to it. You can have a great website and even a great product but if no one see’s it its useless. Most people do not know about SEO, or if they do they may not know that much about it. SEO stands for search engine optimization. The reason its important is because 80% of the U.S market finds where they want to go through Google ALONE. That means if your not listed in the top page rank its going to be hard to get people to come to your website. The biggest failure of most entrepreneur’s or small business owners who want to build an e-commerce store is the unrealistic expectation that your site will be first to pop up for electronics or fashion apparel. Getting a page rank of number 1 takes many months, and I defy anyone to tell you they can do it in a couple days. Even paying for SEO and ads will not get you a page rank of one.

Shoddy Web Designers

Web Design has become a business that everyone feels like they know how to do. However getting a shoddy webdesigner who doesn’t employe proper web design practices can actually hurt your website severely. You must tailor your website to be easily indexable, secure, and well designed. You would be surprised at even some of the firms that charge 15,000+ per website that employ bad tactics for web design.

Conclusion

Can you start your own online business and succeed? Definitely! But you need to have a plan, and realize it will take a long time for your business to get customers through the internet. If your starting an online business expect to get your customers through posting on traditional in person forms of marketing (i.e. word of mouth). If you work hard word will spread about your site and within a years time a hard work you may start getting you a pagerank on google or msn.

Your domain name is perhaps the single most important way to attract people to your site. Lets take a simple example.

Lets say we want to build a website for Tabitha Grear (fictitious name) who is a freelance chef that mainly specializes in traditional Hawaii recipes. Since 90% of all traffic on the internet is directed through search engines we need to optimize our site for the name Tabitha Grear. We want to be the first search hit for anyone who types “Tabitha Grear”, but also for her cook book Grear’s Hawaiian Payan Crazy Recipes (:-D).

This seems like such a basic principle, but its a concept most people forget when choosing a domain name. Many people get caught up in make a very clever and intriguing name. If we make cookme.com, then that site is going to have a much tougher time to get ranked for the keywords “Tabitha Grear” then TabithaGrear.com. The reason is simple, most new websites don’t have content or time to have links pointing to their site so search engines really have nothing to go off of other then the name of the domain. How can we apply this to everyday business sites?

Lets take a more practical example. You have a Small Book Store that focuses on Christian Books in the Atlanta metro Area. Well then, instead of JCBooks.com (even if thats your bookstore name), a better way to attract visitors to your site believe it or not would be AtlantaChristianBooks.com.

A great tool I often use is

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

This tool will show you approximately how many searches for individual keywords a year there are. Finding a niche domain name is key to effectively market your site.

Common Myths

A common myth is that .net or .org will be lower ranked then a .com domain name. Insinuating that .com is inherently better then all other domain names. This myth simply is not true, .net or .org will be ranked based upon the same principles at .com.

This is the solution to a common problem I recently encountered when fixing a clients computer.

Situation:

Your either installing a new motherboard or replacing an old one and you start the computer only to find it turns on with the CPU fan spinning, and lights staying on (including the HDD and CPU light staying on) but the computer will not post (meaning nothing will come on the screen).

Possible Causes:

Obviously the first thing you should do is unplug everything that is nonessential. This means all the jumper cables that connect your PC case to the motherboard except the power switch. Disconnect all harddrives, cdroms, and any non-essential cards. Make sure the red switch behind the powersupply is set to 115 (and 230 if you live in Europe). If you turn on your computer and still no success then you might have had the same issue I did. Also make sure the RAM you are using is compatible with your motherboard. If you are using DDR3 1600 MHZ when your motherboard requires DDR3 1333MHZ, even though 1600 should work I would find a way to test the motherboard with the recommended clock speed.

My issue was because I carelessly left the 12V pin on my motherboard disconnected because my powersupply had no cable to connect to it. The 12V 4 pin (or 6 -8 pin) powers your CPU and if you have a solid CPU light and your computer is not posting you need to find an adapter to power the 12V slot or make sure your powersupply has enough power. On new motherboards (especially the A770E3) you should have two direct cables going to the motherboard. The 24 pin power supply cord, and the 4 pin 12V cpu cord.
